Florida Will Inspect Your Home for Free
Florida recently expanded its hurricane-protection programs.
Here is what Jupiter homeowners should know.
Start with the inspection
Florida’s My Safe Florida Home program offers no-cost wind-mitigation inspections to eligible site-built, owner-occupied homes with a homestead exemption, subject to program funding and eligibility rules. The inspection does not require an income or home-value test, but the property must still meet the program’s eligibility criteria.
The inspection report may identify potential insurance-premium discounts associated with existing or recommended wind-mitigation features, such as opening protection, roof features, or secondary water resistance. Any actual discount is determined by the insurer, so confirm the result with your insurance company.
Grants for approved mitigation work
Some homeowners may qualify for up to $10,000 toward approved mitigation improvements. Eligibility depends on the inspection, income and property requirements, construction date, and other program rules. Roof-related work may qualify only when it is part of an eligible, inspection-recommended mitigation project; confirm the exact scope before proceeding.
Do not begin work before receiving official grant approval. Starting mitigation work before approval can affect eligibility for reimbursement.
A separate sales-tax refund
Florida allows a total refund of up to $500 of previously paid sales tax on qualifying impact-resistant windows, exterior doors, and garage doors purchased at retail from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2029 and installed on an eligible site-built residential property with a granted homestead exemption and a just value of $700,000 or less. Refund claims must be filed by September 30, 2029. Confirm the current requirements with the Florida Department of Revenue before relying on the benefit.
The free inspection is the first step in the grant process. It may also help you understand which mitigation features are present or recommended, even if you do not receive a grant.
