"Ready to Protect Your Home? Discover Home Warranties Now!"

As a homeowner or a potential homeowner, you might have thought about getting a home warranty or if a home warranty made sense for you and your home. Like many other topics I have discussed, it depends on your situation, and the answer will vary for each person.

What is a home warranty, and how does it differ from home insurance? A home warranty is a service contract that covers the repairs and services to your home appliances and systems like ovens, washers, dryers, and septic systems. This is more of a complement to home insurance, which covers damage or loss due to known perils. The idea would be that a home warranty fills in any gaps in a home insurance policy.

A home warranty can cost anything from 480 to 1020 dollars per year, depending on your location and how much you want to cover. It is very similar to home insurance because the more coverage you want, the higher the premium.

Well, now that you understand home warranties, should you get a home warranty plan? There are various reasons you might decide to get a home warranty plan.

  1. Comfort and Peace of mind: Some people would rather have the peace of mind of knowing that if one of their significant appliances breaks, they are covered and will not have to pay out of pocket. If you are not the best at handling unexpected repairs, a home warranty might be a good decision.
  2. Budget-friendly: By paying an affordable annual fee, you can save from high unexpected repair costs. One repair could cost you several thousand dollars, making the home warranty plan a good idea.
  3. Out-dated appliances: While your home warranty plan would most likely be higher if your appliances and systems are old, it might be wise to be prepared if you expect them to malfunction soon. You know your home best, so only you will know best if you expect any appliance issues.
  4. Seller’s incentive: If you plan on selling your home, you could offer the home warranty as part of the deal to drive more interest in the home and instill confidence in the buyers.

If any of the reasons stand out to you, then it might be something to consider. If you get the quotes and decide against it, no harm, no foul.

On the other hand, times when you might not need a home warranty is with new construction where most of the home is under warranty. In addition, if you just got all new appliances, those will most likely still be under warranty.
