The Jupiter Inlet Is Getting Dangerous

If you have been out on the water lately, I am sure you have seen it.

The sandbars in the Jupiter Inlet are shifting constantly. Every time I go out, it looks different. What was deep last week is shallow this week. A local captain posted a video about it recently that has been viewed over 400,000 times, and it generated a lot of attention.

The problem is that Jupiter Inlet is not designated as a federal navigation channel. That means the Corps cannot just send equipment to fix it. The Jupiter Inlet Navigation District finished its dredging project last week but is only authorized to work inside the inlet. The dangerous sandbar outside the mouth is essentially nobody's responsibility right now.

Officials are working on a longer term solution but it involves permits, budget increases, and coordination between multiple agencies. In the meantime, if you are heading out, go slow, check conditions before you leave the dock, and do not assume the cut looks the same as your last trip.

Reply and let me know what you're seeing out there.
